OBGYN Labor and Delivery Facility, Maternity Waiting Home (MWH), and Chapel Project Background
The OBGYN Labor and Delivery Facility and Maternity Waiting Home (MWH) are vital components of a comprehensive maternal and child health initiative. Maternity Waiting Homes are residential facilities located near a qualified medical center where women defined as “high risk” can safely await their delivery and be transferred to a nearby hospital shortly before childbirth—or earlier should complications arise.
Caritas Veritate Missions seeks to partner with the Sisters serving at the Catholic hospital in Mwanbani, Tanzania, within the Mbeya Diocese.
With the full approval and blessing of the Bishop of Mbeya Diocese, Caritas Veritate Missions will raise funds and assist in constructing and operating a fully functional OBGYN Labor and Delivery Facility, a Maternity Waiting Home (MWH), and an adjoining Chapel. These combined facilities will provide dignified, faith-based care and have been proven to significantly reduce infant, child, and maternal mortality rates in underserved regions.

Mwambani Mission Hospital is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya, functioning under the supervision of Archbishop, Rev. Gervas John Mwasikwabhila Nyaisonga. It is located in Songwe District Council. Songwe District is one of the four districts in the Region of Songwe. (See Letter From Archbishop, Rev. Gervas John Mwasikwabhila Nyaisonga.)
Mwambani Mission Hospital was founded by the Missionaries of the Franciscan Sisters of Denekamp (The Netherlands) in 1968.
The hospital health services cover the entire district of Songwe but the service area extends beyond district boundaries to Chunya and Mbeya Rural Districts (Mbeya Region), Momba, and Mbozi Districts (Songwe region).
The hospital provides health services to a population of 174,709 people (87,500 males and 87,209 females) as per the 2012 National Population Census. It is the only referral Hospital in Songwe.
